POSITION SUMMARY The essential function of the position within the organization is to repair and/or maintain County and smaller municipality vehicles and equipment. The position is responsible for servicing and/or repairing assigned vehicles and equipment, performing diagnostics, performing safety checks, installing equipment on public safety vehicles, operating a service truck to perform vehicle repairs in the field, and completing required paperwork. The position works under general supervision according to some procedures; decides how and when to complete tasks.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs diagnostics and makes repairs on vehicles and/or equipment, such as overhauling engines/motors, replacing or repairing transmissions, rebuilding pumps, or repairing hydraulic systems or heating and air-conditioning units.
  • Performs servicing/scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles or equipment such as changing oil and filters, spark plugs or brake pads, or rotating tires.
  • Performs periodic safety checks on vehicles and addresses safety issues, and installs equipment on public safety vehicles.
  • Test-drives vehicles to locate problem areas and to ensure proper functioning of vehicles upon completion of maintenance or repair tasks; transports vehicles to/from customers/vendors as directed. Mechanic II
  • Operates a service truck and repairs vehicles in the field; transports vehicles to/from customers/vendors as required.
  • Fills out work orders for completed jobs, including work performed, length of time required to complete tasks, and parts used.
  • Performs layout, fabrication and welding in compliance with County policy and safety standards.
  • Researches, locates and orders parts and materials required for vehicle/equipment repairs; participates in cleaning and maintenance of work area and shop equipment.


Education and Experience Requires ASE certification (within 6 mo of hire) and a valid State of Georgia Driver’s License and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record. Requires four years of related experience. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills is acceptable.
