Job Description

Ensures the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the City’s information systems to support core organizational functions; provides essential Information Technology (IT) infrastructure planning, coordination, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of enterprise-level application, server, and network-related systems.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Administers server infrastructure.
  • Implements and manages backup processes for servers and databases.
  • Implements and manages server monitoring and alerting processes.
  • Manages physical servers and virtual servers running VMWare.
  • Applies operating system patches and upgrades on a regular basis.
  • Maintains active directory.
  • Assists with maintaining and troubleshooting phone system.
  • Maintains the cloud-based services, including Office 365.
  • Provides technical support, training, information, and assistance to end users for hardware and software use; responds to service desk calls and requests for assistance; maintains documentation of activities; documents status of repairs in the help desk system; and performs follow-up with end users to ensure all is working appropriately.
  • Works with executive team members, decision makers, and stakeholders to define requirements and systems goals for the City and to identify and resolve government systems issues.
  • Conducts research on software and systems products to justify recommendations and to support purchasing efforts.
  • Interacts and negotiates with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure system-related products and services.
  • Gauges the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems; develops and implements strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems.
  • Ensures system connectivity of servers, shared software, and other applications.
  • Creates and maintains documentation as it relates to system configuration, mapping, processes, and service records.
  • Ensures compatibility and interoperability of City computing systems.
  • Coordinates and performs in-depth tests including end-user reviews for modified and new systems.
  • Monitors and tests system performance; prepares and delivers system performance statistics and reports.
  • Manages servers including e-mail, print, backup servers, and their associated operating systems and software.
  • Manages security solutions including firewall, anti-virus, and intrusion detection systems.
  • Manages all network hardware and equipment including routers, switches, hubs, and UPSs.
  • Ensures network connectivity of all workstations.
  • Administers and maintains end user accounts, permissions, and access rights.
  • Performs server and security audits.
  • Monitors and tests network performance and provides network performance statistics and reports.
  • Manages and/or provides guidance to junior members of the team.
  • Assists staff in the performance of their duties as required
  • Assists in the training of staff, which may include, but not be limited to, one-on-one or group settings.
  • Transports equipment as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field; four (4) years of related work experience in systems administration, support, and analysis along with experience in both hardware configuration and software installation; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

Desires A+, Microsoft Windows, and Server certifications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the full range of IT system and phone operations.
  • Knowledge of computers, servers, switches, routers, and various networking testing equipment
  • Knowledge of VMWare and Windows 2008/ 2012 Server.
  • Knowledge of Storage Array Network (SAN), preferably NetApp.
  • Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in analyzing and problem solving.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve potential and real operational and system deficiencies to ensure continued and non-disrupted service to system users.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to work independently.
