POSITION SUMMARY
The essential function of the position within the organization is to serve as lead worker in
performing semi-skilled work in operating construction equipment in the Roads and Bridges
Department. The position is responsible for operating construction equipment and performing
labor tasks as needed. The position works under general supervision according to some
procedures; decides how and when to complete tasks.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be
assigned.
• Serves as lead worker in the operating of equipment such as a bulldozer, motor grader, asphalt
roller, power broom, milling machine, uniloader, rubber tire loader or backhoe in the
construction and maintenance of County roads.
• Operates a transit to check surface grade of work sites to ensure compliance with construction
plans.
• Assists the supervisor in estimating the amount and type of materials, tools and supplies
required at job sites.
• Operates trucks to haul materials and pipes, or transport departmental personnel to and from
construction/repair sites.
• Leads in the performance of miscellaneous tasks such as welding, patching potholes, repairing
guardrails or operating mower tractors in the maintenance of right-of-ways and other grassy
County property.
• Monitors and performs duties of laborer as necessary, such as patching streets and gutters by
hand, loading and unloading materials, pulling limbs and debris, or chain sawing and pole
sawing trees.
• Ensures proper traffic control at construction/repair sites, including flagging of traffic and/or
erecting traffic signs; ensures proper location of flaggers at all times as available.
• Operates miscellaneous equipment such as chainsaw, pole saw, chipper or weed eater as
needed to facilitate completion of tasks.
• Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; ensures the
completion of required repair work on equipment and cleans equipment as needed.
• Assists with training of departmental personnel, maintains logs of daily activities, completes
work orders, and fills out related job forms.

Requirements

Education and Experience

Requires high school diploma, GED or vocational training.
Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and
skills is acceptable.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations
Requires NSC Flagger certification, and a valid State of Georgia Class C Driver’s License and
satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: “Licenses,

Requires NSC Flagger certification, and a valid State of Georgia Class C Driver’s License and
satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: “Experience Requirements” refers to the amount of work
experience that is required for entry into the position that would result in reasonable expectation
that the person can perform the tasks required by the position.
Requires two years of related experience.

and coordination of limb and body movement.
Requires medium work involving standing or walking most of the time, exerting 20 to 50 pounds
