About History Cherokee

History Cherokee is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Cherokee County. History Cherokee operates the Cherokee County History Center, an 11,500-square-foot museum that serves as a hub for education, community engagement, and historic preservation. The History Center, opened in 2023, offers exhibits, educational resources, programs, and event spaces to connect people with their local heritage.

 

Position

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership of the organization. Roles and responsibilities include enhancing stakeholder relationships, fundraising, managing staff, ensuring the organization’s fiscal stability, and overseeing overall operations of the History Center and Museum. The Executive Director reports to the Personnel Committee of the Board of Directors of History Cherokee.

The Executive Director will ensure the history center and museum’s fiscal health through budgeting, oversight, and reporting.

The Executive Director will represent History Cherokee in the broader community, cultivating partnerships with peer organizations, civic groups, and the tourism sector.

Board Relations

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to provide updates on organizational progress, financial status, and strategic direction.
  • Support board and committee meetings, providing necessary information and reports

Financial Management

  • Oversee the organization’s budget, ensuring financial stability and sustainability.
  • Oversee fundraising strategies to secure necessary funding.

Facility Management

  • Oversee the maintenance, operations and functionality of the Cherokee County History Center and the Rock Barn.

Program and Exhibition Management

  • Oversee the development and implementation of all organizational programs and services.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key community stakeholders, including donors, partners, and advocates.
  • Represent the organization at public events and conferences.
  • Promote awareness of the organization’s mission and programs.

Requirements

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is a visionary and engaging leader with a deep passion for museums and history, possessing a strong background in nonprofit administration and a proven record in fundraising and development.

Qualifications for the role include substantial experience in fundraising and donor relations, high communication skills and proficient office technology skills, as well as experience in the non-profit realm and arts/cultural affairs. A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in a related field is preferred, although a proven past history may be taken into consideration.  At least five to seven years of relevant experience is required.
