Job Description

Arranges for efficient and accurate collection of information for orderly registration of pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.  Collects and distributes patient information, billing information, and collection information.  Makes patients and families aware of hospital policies and procedures.  The duties of this position require the exercise of courtesy in speaking with patients, families, and others to maintain sound community relations.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.   Interviews patients, or other legally appropriate parties, in a customer-focused manner to obtain patient information necessary for registration, billing, and collection including patient, guarantor, and emergency contact demographics, insurance coverage to include subscriber demographics, and medical reason for visit (Diagnosis Codes) and procedure (Procedure Codes), if applicable.  Enters all information into registration system.

2.   Ensures verifiable information is accurate and complete by obtaining appropriate copies of pertinent information to include patient’s picture identification, insurance card(s), 3rd party liability information (e.g., Worker’s Compensation, Employee Health), etc. to protect patient safety and avoid insurance fraud.  If information is not available at the time of registration, provides mechanism by which the patient or legally appropriate party may provide the information to the business office.

3.   Assigns appropriate medical record number and patient account number by appropriately searching the Master Patient Index (MPI) and selecting the correct patient and date of service (if pre-registered) to ensure patient safety and avoid duplicate medical records and accounts. Organize and maintain service department schedules for efficient patient flow.  Process cancelled procedures by communicating with service department to determine appropriate actions.

Requirements

  • Six months clerical or customer service experience – preferably in a hospital or medical office.
  • Excellent communication and strong customer service skills.
  • Working knowledge and ability to perform accurately and efficiently on computer.
  • Typing skills of 30 wpm.
